WHO CAN DO MATCHED BETTING? MEET THE MATCHED BETTORS

My aim in running this matched betting blog is to show how easy it is for anyone to do matched betting. It’s ideal for anyone with a little spare time. So whether you work full or part time, you’re at home with your children, studying or retired, it’s possible to make substantial amounts of extra cash. To highlight this, I’m introducing a new monthly feature so you can find out more about the type of people who make extra money matched betting.

INTRODUCING JODIE, THE MATCHED BETTING MUM

To kick start things, I thought it was only fair that you found out a little bit more about me. You can find out more about my background here.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF

I’m Jodie, I’m 38  and I live in rural Suffolk. Until I had my daughter five years ago, I had a high flying career in the civil service mapped out for me. But, with a move to the countryside planned, I decided to jump ship when voluntary redundancies were offered. I’d longed to start up my own small business and work for myself, so it seemed the perfect opportunity to try something new.

I ran a small antiques and vintage business from home but was forced to take a break when my son was born two years ago. This made me realise just how much time the business took up. So I started to look into alternative options to make money. Like so many other people, I wanted to do something which also give me the flexibility to be there for my young family.

Now my days are occupied running around after two hectic and mad little children, whilst squeezing in time to make extra cash matched betting and running this blog.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT MATCHED BETTING AND WHAT DID YOU THINK?

I can remember first seeing matched betting mentioned on a forum a couple of years ago. After a quick google search, I saw there was a thread all about it on Money Saving Expert. But highlighted in bold at the top it also said you needed to be cautious doing matched betting. So I assumed it was some form of trading and didn’t read it any further.

However, a few months later I came across a reference again. This time, I was intrigued enough to do a little more research. Initially, I didn’t really understand how matched betting could work. It’s fair to say I was also a little bit sceptical. However, after seeing lots of people sharing their experiences on Netmums and also reading about a journalist testing it out in the Guardian, I decided it might be worth a try.

After researching various matched betting services, I decided to sign up to Profit Accumulator’s free trial. With more than 20,000 members, this provided me with assurance that their training and advice would be of  a high standard. I wasn’t disappointed! My Profit Accumulator review gives a detailed account of the service they provide.

WHEN DID YOU START MATCHED BETTING?

Last July. I’ve now been doing matched betting for a year! Since then I’ve made more than £7,500. You can find out how I’ve done this in my regular matched betting diary series.

WHY DOES MATCHED BETTING APPEAL TO YOU?

Matched betting is a really easy and quick way to make money from home. When I started I hoped to make about £500 per month but wasn’t sure how realistic this was. But it really is possible! Once you understand the process it takes hardly any time at all. And I can squeeze it in easily around the children.

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND MATCHED BETTING?

I try to allow myself about an hour for matched betting most days. However, squeezing in this time alongside the school run, play dates and running this blog means this isn’t always possible.

In general, on a good week I’ll normally spend about six hours matched betting. But if I’m busy – especially at the weekends – it’s not unusual for me to spend a maximum of three to fours hours matched betting each week.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH THE MONEY YOU’RE MAKING MATCHED BETTING?

Some garden renovations and house decorating last year meant we built up some debt. Matched betting will allow us to clear that debt earlier than originally planned.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO MIGHT BE THINKING ABOUT STARTING MATCHED BETTING?

Be diligent and do some research about what matched betting is first of all. Have a good read of my post offering tips for anyone starting out. Matched betting isn’t for everyone so have a think about whether it might suit you. My summary of the pros and cons of matched betting is helpful background reading. You may also want to open a separate bank account or build up a small pot of money which you can use to get started.

Other than this, though, don’t hold back! I was really nervous when I started and kept putting it off. My biggest regret is that I didn’t start matched betting earlier than I did.
